Driving & Driving Test Tips: Canadian traffic tickets, s driver, traffic ticket

Question
Hi, I am from Massachusettes.  I recently got a traffic ticket driving through British Columbia for speeding.  I was wondering how this will affect me in the US; will it add points to my license?  What difference will it make whether I pay it or not?  Thanks for your time.

Answer
Jessica-

I am sorry to hear that you were ticketed.  I am assuming that you are not disputing it in a Canadian court and would like to pay the fine and forget about it.

Since the violation was out of the country, I know of no law that allows that to be put on your driving record or requires you to inform your insurance company.  I also checked your state's driver's manual just to make sure.  The only catch would be if you ever wanted to live in Canada.  Then I am sure your record there would reflect it.

So consider yourself lucky.  Do remember...if that happens in another state (i.e. Minnesota), it would go on your driving record and your insurance would go up.

Safe driving,

Michael
