Driving & Driving Test Tips: Towing a caravan, towing a caravan, snake bar

Question
Bit of an odd question really, but we have bought a caravan - about 16' and want to know if our 1600 Escort will be ok to pull it!!  Next door neighbours pulled a trailer tent with an 1100cc Escort, seemingly without too many problems, but we would like to be sure.  Can anybody help or re-assure?
Many thanks

Answer
Hi Paul

Your 1600cc engine should be fine however one important aspect of towing a caravan is to make sure that it is properly packed.

The caravan floor space should be used evenly when loading up with the items you are taking. The caravan when being towed should not sit way down at the back, or stoop way down at the front.

It is also advisable to get an anti-snake bar, this is a useful peice of equipment and helps to keep your caravan steady when towing, it's also useful for when you are being overtaken by large vehicles.

Remember to stay within your speed limit and allow plenty time for your journey, most of all arrive safely.

Happy caravaning

Tommy.
