Transportation and Vehicle Safety: Regarding keeping extra gas in car, incase of emergency, gas tank

Question
Hi Terrry,

I have a question for you. I have recently brought a car for me and I am new to driving in US. I wanted to know that can I keep some extra gas in a plastic bottle inside my car, incase of emergency (like stuck of a highway because of empty fuel tank)? Does the law allows me do that?

I am not sure? Please advise.

Thanks

Answer
Hello Saurabh and welcome to AllExperts!

Firstly, gasoline can only be placed into lawfully approved containers that are designed to hold fuels. Placing gasoline into non-approved containers is not only against the law, but highly dangerous. Many plastics can dissolve or degrade when coming into contact with gasoline. Some chemicals within plastics can create unanticipated results as they combine and bond with gasoline as well.

Secondly, even when using an approved container, it is never a good idea to carry gasoline with you other than meeting an immediate need. Gasoline is highly flammable and in some cases, explosive. The approved container doesn't have the same protection as your vehicles gas tank either.

When transporting it, ensure the can is full, sealed well, and placed in your trunk where it won't become dislodged. Also ensure there are no sources of ignition in the trunk, such as flares or items that can cause sparks or flames.

I hope this has helped. Sorry for the shortened answer, as I am using my iPhone.

Have a great day!
