Transportation and Vehicle Safety: Use of cruise control, ford fusion, gas mileage

Question
Should I use the cruise control on my 2008 Ford Fusion as often as possible (when on the open road) in order to conserve fuel or does cruise control use more fuel?  Thanks for straightening out this issue.

Answer
Hi Bella and welcome to AllExperts!

The greatest use of gasoline is when accelerating to your desired speed (x). The greater the acceleration (abrupt and forceful), the more fuel is used and the worse your gas mileage becomes.

The second greatest use of fuel is when maintaining a high speed (x), where (x) is something over 65 mph.

When driving on a highway for a moderate to long period of time, even when attempting to maintain a constant speed, we are making unnoticeable changes in speed, which relate to numerous accelerations. For this reason, it's better to allow your cruise control to maintain this for you as there will be far less automated changes and smoother gas saving accelerations which account for better gas mileage.

This doesn't work in traffic that prevents your speed from being maintained. Also, you shouldn't use this if you are sleepy or noticing attention deficient responses for obvious reasons.

I hope this has helped.

Have a great day!
