Transportation and Vehicle Safety: vehicle weight in relation to gas miledge, gas mileage, moving to florida

Question
I am planing on moving to Florida, I don't have many things that I am taking but it is enough to fill my 1998 saturn. Maybe 350lbs worth of stuff, is it cheaper to have it shipped to save on weight in the car, how much would the extra weight effect my gas miledge.

Answer
Hi Dan and welcome to AllExperts!

As long as everything can fit into the Saturn without affecting your ability to drive safely, it would be far cheaper than to have it shipped.

When you ship something, you are paying for their gas, their maintenance and their salary for the driver, as well as a profit margin. The vehicle they drive doesn't get the great mileage that you do.

Lastly, 350 pounds is not that much. Consider driving somewhere with two additional passengers at 175 pounds each, which is identical in weight. Your gas mileage will not vary much at all.

I hope this helps Dan.
