Transportation and Vehicle Safety: Quick Question, public roadway, foreign embassy

Question
Hello,
I am considering buying a truck..1 Ton Diesel...Would I need to get a CDL to drive this truck..Looks like an ordinary truck? Dumb question I know...But any help would be appreciated. Regards-Skyler

Answer
Hi Skyler

By using the term 'CDL', I assume you are referring to a 'California Drivers License'?

If you are a resident in this sate, or someone who will reside in California for more than 90 days, then you must have a CDL to drive any licensed vehicle on a public roadway, unless you are active duty in the military or part of a foreign embassy.

In so far as whether it is a diesel, gasoline, alternate fuel or electric, this isn't a factor. Depending on how much weight the vehicle will hold or tow and whether it has a trailer will determine what type of CDL you must have.

Driving a 1 ton truck only requires a class 3 (standard) license, no different than driving a 2 seater 4-cylinder sub compact car.

If you have meant something different, please advise.
