will a transmission out of a 1995 or 96chevy suburban 4wd work in a 2001chevy 2500 4wd pickup?

You need to get the numbers off of the transmissions, and check spline count on the shafts.  Depending on the motors that you have, the bell housing may be different also.  When you get the numbers off the transmissions, then you can reference the replacement to make sure input, and output shafts will fit, and that the bell housing is the same.
