4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: clicking noise when turning, cv joints, transfer case

Question
Hi, i have a 86 nissan 4x4 720 pickup 5 speed manuel trans when i put it in 4 wheel drive every thing works good until i start to turn and then i here a clicking noise , do you have any ideas? Thankyou Very Much Gary .

Answer
Gary,

My first intuition, is that you have cv joints in the front axles.  If you do, check them for cracked or torn boots, as this is a sure sign of cv joint failure.  There could be several other components that can cause this, such as a bad u-joint in the front drive line.  These are the most common parts that fail and cause this type of noise.
If it isn't either of these items, then you could have a front differential problem, or a failing component in the transfer case.
