4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: Chevy 4 x 4, paved surface, running gear

Question
Our 1989 Chevy runs fine in 2 wheel drive but when we put it in 4 wheel drive it wants to pull you off the road to either side. Have had it to a local mechanic and they can not figure out the problem. Any suggestions??????

Answer
Kevin,

First of all, I hope you aren't putting it in 4-wheel drive on a hard or paved surface.  This puts a bad strain on the transfer case and running gear, and also causes steering problems.

Another issue is that the rig may have a locker in the front which is even more hazardous to drive on hard surfaces when in 4-wheel drive.

Make sure that you are in a loose environment, such as snow, sand, mud, etc before you try to use 4-wheel drive and see if you still have this problem.
