4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: Transfer Case Noise, noise question, drive shaft

Question
QUESTION: I'll be driving at highway speeds then it sounds like the transfer case is trying to go into 4x4 on its own. Loud and grinding noise. I have to come to a stop, then here a clunk and its fine for awhile. Can I disconnect the front driveshaft and drive it like that? Question? Is the front driveshaft supposed to spin in 2wd? Thanks for any help.

ANSWER: Jonathan, without knowing what type of vehicle it is that you are working on , its hard for me to answer this question , what is it? ADAM

QUESTION: Adam, Sorry about that. It is a 2005 F-150. Thank you for replying.

Answer
Jonathan, You can disconect the front drive shaft and still drive it. I would say that you have some internal problems with your transfer case. What happens is the forks and fork guides get worn and than the gears want to jump around inside, we tear them apart all the time here in our shop, I would take it to a shop you trust and let them take a look , but if you dont need the 4x4 than you can keep driving it .
