4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 2001 Ford F150, air control valve, auto parts distributor

Question
Hi Matt,My F150 will start fine in the mornings when I drive to work(7 miles). After sitting in the hot sun for 10 hours it will not start. It turns on for a second then turns off. Has gas in the tank but seems like it doesn't.If I press on the accelerator it stays on but as soon as I depress the accelerator it turns off. There is no Diagnostic code or engine light coming on.2 mechanics can't figure it out after 2 different diagnostic checks everything seems fine.Unfortunately at the mechanic shop the truck turns on fine. Please help.

Answer
so, as long as you have your foot on the gas it will run fine right? If this is the issue it is a bad idle air control valve. This device is located on the side of the throttle body and re routs air around the throttle plate to give the engine enough air to idle. Unlike a carburator the throttle plate fully closes instead of remaining open slightly to achieve the same outcome. The valve is around $40-50 and can be bought at any auto parts distributor and it has 2 8 millimeter bolt and 1 plug holding it on and be sure to replace the gasket as well. You may have to remove a plastic trim piece covering the throttle body to locate it but it will look like a silver cylinder and a bracket attached to it

Hope this helps
