4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: suv rolls when in gear, chevy s10 blazer, s10 blazer

Question
Hi, I have a 96 Chevy S10 blazer. AWD. I parked it on an incline and looked out about an hour later it was at the bottom of the driveway. It was in park. Now I have to park it all the time with the emergency brake on. Also, approximately the same time the all wheel drive stopped working. (gas mileage is better but...) I am hearing a clicking noise and was told this could be coming from the transfer case. Any advise?

Answer
Kris,

You seem to have a bad viscous clutch inthe transfer case letting the drivelines freewheel when it is parked. This is pretty dangerous and should be adressed soon. The clutch inside the t case slips the front wheels when you turn as to not bind up the front axle. This clutch can slip when parked and let the vehicle roll even if the transmission isn't turning. I would take it to a transmission shop to see if they can verify this and they may be able to replace that clutch and fix the problem fairily quick
