4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 2002 GMC Denali, axle shaft, transfer case

Question
Hello, I have a 2002 GMC Denali... It has been a great SUV! Have had no real problems with it up till now... In the last couple of weeks, I have noticed that after I drive the vehicle for approximately 10 to 15 miles I hear a loud grinding and popping sound when I turn to the right or left. Straight ahead driving is fine there is no sound... Its just weird because it's fine for the first 10 miles or so... I can turn left and right and it makes no sound, operates normally but after I drive for a while and go to make a left or right turn thats when the sound happens... And I wanted to get your opinion so when I take it to my service guys I can let him know where to check! I was wondering if its a problem in my differential or if its the hub.... I know the SUV is all wheel drive all the time... Any help would be much appreciated!!! Thanks

Answer
There is a viscous clutch in the transfer case of your vehicle. This slips the front axle shaft to prevent any binding in the gearing. this may be going out or is already bad and it takes a few miles to build up the gea lash so this may be your problem
