4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 1993 Ford Explorer starter problem, ford suv, starter problem

Question
I have an old Ford SUV that recently won't turn over. Battery terminals tight
and OK. Battery good, rest of electric stuff works. Won't boost start from
another vehicle. Clicking sound when trying. Could a non-mechanic like me
replace a starter if that's it? Is there a solenoid that's part of the starter? Is
there a fusible link in a cable anywhere that could be fried? How could a
dummy troubleshoot and fix? If it is the starter is it best left to the pros?
Thanks a lot.

Answer
Rich,

If it is the starter, I have no doubt that you can do it yourself. But, on some of the older fords, there was a solenoid that is near the battery. Follow the positive battery cable from the battery and the solenoid should be within about a foot of the battery. These are about $20 and worth a try to see if it helps before the starter. Let me know if this doesn't fix it and I can talk you through the starter replacement

Matt

P.S.- unhook battery and replace 1 wire at a time on the solenoid so you don't mix them up
