I'm trying to make this beast work. I have a ranger rover voge se v.8 petrol, 1989,and it just will not start.I have petrol in the tank and the pump is working  but dose not switch off.the petrol is going around the system and there is sparks from the h.t. leads (all)  but the thing will not start HELP........

Sounds like you may have a faulty carburetor float, or needle valve.  This would allow the fuel to free flow, and could explain why the fuel pump is constantly running.  If this is the case, you should smell the petrol fumes coming from the motor.

Another possibility is that the fuel pump is bad, and pumping air.  In this case the carburetor would not be getting sufficient fuel to start the engine.
