4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 1992 S10 4 wheel drive circuit, auto parts stores, transmission shop

Question
My Hayes manual for a 92 S10 has little on the function of the 4 wheel drive circuit. My truck shifts into gear but does not fully disengage. As the truck was recently purchased used, I find a softball size reservoir plugged in the engine compartment and a solenoid type device with a lead/cable going to the transfer case via a device on the side of the transfer case. Any suggestion on determining how to repair this circuit?

Answer
Ken,

The first thing that I would do, would be to take the S-10 to a reputable lube, or transmission shop, and have the fluids changed.  At the same time, I would see if they can check to make sure the linkage is adjusted properly.

If you want to do the work yourself, I would suggest that you purchase a repair manual, and try to change the fluids, and adjust the linkage on the transfer case.  A Chilton's or a Hayne's manual can be purchased at most auto parts stores for $20, and they have a lot of information on basic trouble shooting, and repairs.  These manuals are designed for a year or range of years for specific vehicles, and are invaluable if you are planning on doing any repairs yourself.
