4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: start problems, auto parts stores, hayne

Question
my jeep will not start, it turns well but just doesn't get started
any suggestions

Answer
Ed,

Two problems can cause this.  These are, no gas, or no spark.  Check to see if you are getting gas to the carburetor, or fuel injection.  If you are, make sure that you are getting spark at the plugs.  Lack of fuel can be anything from a plugged fuel line or filter to a bad fuel pump.  No spark can be a distributer problem, bad plugs, bad plug wires, or a bad coil.  These are the most common components to fail

I would suggest that you purchase a repair manual for your Jeep.  You can purchase a manufacturer's shop manual for the Jeep, but they are quite expensive, normally costing, around $100.  A Chilton's or a Hayne's manual can be purchased at most auto parts stores for $20, and they have a lot of information on basic trouble shooting, and repairs, such as you are concerned with.  These manuals are designed for a year or range of years for specific vehicles, and are invaluable if you are planning on doing any repairs yourself.
