4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: buying a vehicle out of state, better business bureau, motor vehicle department

Question
My husband and I are from Michigan and just recently purchased a 2003 Ford Expedition with a trade of a 2002 Ford Explorer.  We asked this dealership about paying taxes out of state three different times.  They informed us that we only had to pay taxes on the difference of the two vehicles so that is what we did plus put down a deposit. The dealership has given us the complete runaround since we purchased the vehicle and now we received a phone call today stating that we owe more money and have to pay Michigan taxes to get the title.  We clearly asked this question several times at the dealership the day we bought the SUV and was told no.  It has been over a week since we bought this.  What can we do about this and what is the truth?  We feel we are being "screwed over"!

Answer
Hi Nicole and thanks for the question.  Without further information I will not be able but may be able to help you anyway.  Virtually every state has different title/registration/tax rules and these change often.  My advice is to call the local Motor Vehicle Department(that is what it is called in Florida) and explain your problem and I feel sure they will be glad to advise you.  If you continue to have problems I would suggest that you contact the local Better Business Bureau and they should also help you.  If you would like me to help further I need to know where and who the dealer you are buying the vehicle is and any other information and/or further comments you have.  Best of Luck, Bud
