4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: Steering Wheel Clunk, power steering pump, eddie bauer

Question
I have a 1998 Eddie Bauer Ford Explorer with 60K in mileage.  When it is cold there is a very noticeable clunk and growling noise from the steering column as well as some vibration in the column itself when the wheel is turned.  What could it be?  Thank you in advance!  Bryan

Answer
Bryan,

Sounds like you may have a power steering pump problem, or a problem with the steering box.  Usually, the pump will make a growling sound when bad, but the steering box usually doesn't.  Check the fluid in the power steering reservoir, and make sure that it is filled to the proper level.  Also, trace out the power steering hoses, and look for leaks.
