4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 4 wheel drive, differential gears, jeep cheerokee

Question
I just bought a 1989 jeep cheerokee 4 wheel but the guy said there was something wrong with the axle, how do i go about getting this repaired and how much would it run to get it fixed? He said it won't go into 4 wheel

Answer
Kim,

First of all, you need to find out what the real problem is.  Not going into 4-wheel drive can be anything from a transfer case problem, no vacuum to the front axle disconnect, broken u-joint on a front axle, broken front differential gears, broken axle, broken hub, to a missing front drive line.

What you need to do, is to take the Cherokee to a reputable shop (preferably one that specializes in Jeeps), and have the front end checked out.  The cost can run from a few dollars to several hundred, depending on the problem.
