4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: Small SUVs - any good?, toyota rav 4, jeep grand cherokee laredo

Question
My 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo has 175,000 miles on it and has been a fabulous 4-wheel drive car in my state of Colorado.  I live at 8,500 ft and have snow during the winter.  I absolutely must have 4-wheel drive or all wheel drive.  I am 58 years old and no longer need to transport children but I have a long drive to work over mountain roads.  My mechanic says it's time to trade "old faithful" in on another car. I don't want a large SUV and am wondering if the smaller Honda CRV or Toyota Rav 4 are any good.  Reliability is a foremost consideration.  I drive a manual transmission easily.  A little comfort along the way would be nice.  Thank you.

Answer
I personally own a 2001 Toyota RAV4, albeit 2WD, and have not had one problem with it.  I also have friends that have Honda CRV's and they love them, BUT, I live in Florida.  My only concern would be about the power available from either model.  About.com has a great review program of vehicles and I know one of the reviewers lives in Vancouver and tests the vehicles extensively in snow and rough terrain.  I would suggest you go to about.com and look at the reviews and also I would go to www.edmunds.com and see their ratings which I believe are the best in the business.  As a general observation Toyota and Honda are absolutely the best when it come so reliability.  Best of Luck to you.
