Hummers: oil check

Question
Hello

Recently, every time I check the engine oil, the dip stick will show on one side ( the one with MIN and MAX) about 1/2 full  about midway between MIN and MAX), but on the OTHER side of the stick it is much higher, like I have too much oil. I do check it first thing in the morning when the engine is cold. I use only Castrol GTX  5/30  for card over 80,000 miles.

Any adivese here, please?

Thank you,   Gabe

Answer
Gabe,

I am not sure what kind of vehicle you have but the owners manual is always the best place to start. If the oil is showing up in the crosshatch area that is the reading I would use. When I check engine oil I usually run the car briefly and wait one or two minutes and then check the oil level. Many things can affect the reading such as oil temperature, is the car level, is the oil warm or cold, is the dipstick tube at an extreme angle?

So if you are getting a consistent reading in the crosshatched area use that one but consider the aforementioned factors.
