Jeep: Check engine light bulb 2000 Cherokee Sport, illumination lamps, indicator lamps

Question
I need to replace the check engine bulb, otherwise I fail NYS inspection.  I have been to the dealer to buy a new one and he does not have it listed in his parts computer.  He told me to pull the bulb and bring it in.  I would rather have the bulb in hand rather than ripping the dash apart just to find the bulb number.  Can you help with the repacement bulb number?

Thank
Ken (Queens, NY)

Answer
Hi Ken,

Strange, because I show a listing of 2 options: a bulb, and a bulb-and-socket, in the PARTS blowup view on the same resource. It doesn't show the bulb location, so it's impossible to tell which option, but I would say just buy one of each. The cluster is really easy to pull, so don't worry about that. The part numbers are:

L000 PC74 -- bulb (10)
4874349   -- bulb and socket (5)

In the wiring diagram section, the instrument cluster schematic shows 5 illumination lamps in parallel, so I would assume the lower number is for cluster illumination, and the top number is for indicator lamps. There is at least 10 indicator lamps, depending on the vehicle, so that seems plausible as well. PC74 seems to be for indicators, like the MIL (Check Engine Light).

NOTE: there are other reasons for no CEL, but I assume you already know there's a bub problem?

Good luck!
