Jeep: Jeep Stalls on idle, torx screws, throttle plate

Question
I have a 91 Wrangler that has 133,000 miles. Last night I was driving around and as I came to a stoplight the Jeep started to sputter, almost like it was going to die. It held the idle and when the light changed I went on. The next light I stopped at the idle didn't hold, the Jeep died, and I smelled gas. I turned off the Jeep and then fired it up once again and it was fine. As long as I am not idling it seems ok. Do you have any idea what this could be? THANKS!!!!!

Answer
Hi Lowell,

I would say that the throttle body is probably very dirty as is the IAC motor this is the by pass valve on the side of the throttle body, I would take the big black air tube off of the throttle body get some Air intake cleaner and a rag.  spray the cleaner into the throttle and start to clean that black carbon off of the throttle plate and the throttle body as well. You can remove the IAC motor from the throttle body by removing the 2 torx screws from the side and pulling it straight out. Clean this and up as best you can with the cleaner. Put it back in  after you have cleaned the hole that is comes from. Start the vehicle it may take a few tried depending on how much cleaner you use. Your vehicle is fuel injected so if it does not idle it means that there is not enough air getting into the combustion chanber via the throttle body or IAC motor. Hope this helps.
