Jeep: Sentry Key Immobilizer Systems, jeep grand cherokee, grand cherokee

Question
3 weeks ago my wife was carjacked in our 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

After a harrowing 3 mile race down some local roads, my wife escaped unharmed by pulling on the emergency brake and fleeing the vehicle.

The vehicle was recovered the next day undamaged (thanks to LOJACK) but the criminal has not been apprehended and has one of the SKIS keys.

I still have the other SKIS key. I've kept the Jeep behind a very secure locked fence since it was recovered.

With one key in my posession, can the SKIS can be reprogrammed or am I looking at major $$s for an entire new lockset & reprogramming?

What is the recommended procedure?

(Thanks)

Answer
This is a good question, you could buy a key blank and bring it and the old key to the dealer and have it reprogrammed however I am not positive this would be the most effective. That would probably be enough to keep the vehicle from running. But if you key is stolen and the Carjacker still has the key they would have unlimited access to the interior of your vehicle as the locks have not been recoded. SO I would say you need to get the vehicle rekeyed and the lock cylinders (all of them) recoded and then have the new transponder keys reprogrammed.
Check with your insurance carrier I know that some of them have cover lock rekeying in the event of the theft of your key.
