Suzuki: Turbo charge a Sidekick, diff gears, fuel mileage

Question
QUESTION: Is there any benefit of installing an after market turbo charger on my 1989 Sidekick?  Looking for more power for going up hills (which most of Idaho roads are).  It has a 5 speed and fuel injection.
Thanks
Bill

ANSWER: You will get more power, but since it's there, you'll use it, and your fuel mileage will drop.

Possible viable alternatives are the 2.0 motor from the Vitara, and the 1.9 VW turbo diesel.

Personally I think the turbo diesel is the best, both on the highway, and off road.

Mine? A 1.3 Samurai with 1.8 Trail Tough Rockblock, 6.5 T-case. 4.57 diff gears.  My priorities are off road, I can live with 35-40 going uphill to get to the high mountain passes.

QUESTION: I assume you are talking about a complete engine swap with either the 2.o or 1.9?

Answer
Yeah, I was talking about an engine swap.

In the 70s and 80s I did a lot of turbo installations, mostly from kits.  I got talked into a few "from scratch" jobs for friends.  Mostly those turned into problem children, with overheating and holes in pistons and heads, etc. so I've avoided that stuff for the past 15 or so years.

The one thing I didn't ask, and should have is - is this primarily a highway vehicle, off road, or mixed use, and if so how much, and what kind of off road?  Trails, cross country, rock crawling, or what?  Has it had other modifications?  What do you want it to turn into?
