Suzuki: ford 302, engine vacuum, accelerator cable

Question
QUESTION: my engine light is flashing 4 x successively - what does this mean - is it possible it is an error since i did disconnect the battery before it started to do this [ it was originally flashing code 12 that indicated hose leaks as i had a very low idle problem but fixed by simply adjusting the accelerator cable - perhaps this adjustment is why it is now flashing a different code ? ] thank you.

ANSWER: Disconnecting the battery usually does not clear or modify codes or their display.
Re-adjust the throttle cable and see what happens.  BTW - adjusting the cable or throttle plate is a certain way to create misadjustment issues in the idle control system. The entire idle control system is electronically monitored and controlled. There is a fairly long procedure in the manual to troubleshoot and adjust.  It's the only way that works without causing other issues to occur.

QUESTION: David, i realize you may not have an answer for this question as it is not a Suzuki - but, i'm hopeful; my son has an 88 Ford 302 pick up and it has idle problems : sometimes when he brakes the idle will go up to about 15 to 1700 rpms - he says it is as if he is stepping on the gas instead of braking - other times when he is shifting and engages the clutch the same thing will occur - he says the engine light never comes on to indicate any problem though...any ideas. thank you. ps he has tried online to find a manual as well as at a dealer [ he is a struggling farmer w/ no money to take it to a dealer so if you can comment it will be very much appreciated ]

Answer
Does this happen when the vehicle is not moving, but the brake pedal is pressed?  The brake power assist uses engine vacuum, and if the brake booster is getting a leak, it can supply extra air that will cause the engine to run faster.
Also check to see (with the engine off) if the throttle returns to idle position right away, or takes a while.  That, too could be an issue
Try those, and if that doesn't get you anywhere, we can talk about other possibilities.
