Suzuki: Sticking safety switch in shifter on auto. 93 Suzuki Sidekick XLS, suzuki sidekick, 4wd roads

Question
Intermittently, my vehicle refuses to turn over when starting.  (all the lights and radio work)  I have had a Suzuki dealer work on it and they believe the problem is a bad safety switch in the automatic shifter of this car.  So, I need to find a another shifter (which they no longer make for the 93s or is it possible to override this safety switch putting in an alternative switch and by-passing the one in the shifter.  Do you have any ideas/solutions?

Answer
Yes, it's possible.  The issue is that if you do so, it would be possible to crank it and have it start in gear.  There were fatalities in the bad old days.  In some cases the vehicle ran over and killed the driver.

If YOU want to bypass it, that's your lookout, but you probably can't get any shop or mechanic to do it because of liability issues.

I bypassed the clutch switch on my Samurai to make it easier on the 4wd roads.  The gearing is sufficiently low on it as to make it possible to crank the engine in gear and get it started.  I know the risks and it makes it easier to restart in relatively extreme situations.

You might try some of the links at izook.com - there are some used and salvage sources there....
