Suzuki: Suzuki Swift, suzuki swift, axle shaft

Hello, I just bought a Suzuki Swift from a friend of mind.  He thought the transmission might have gone out, but I thought I would see what an expert says.
When put in gear the car acts like it wants to go, but makes a loud clunking noise .  Didn't know if you could tell me what it might be or if there was anything else I could look for.

It might NOT be the trans.  It could be one of the axle joints.  If you have the hood open, you can look and see if the axle shafts turn.(It's more often than not the outer joint that fails)  Have someone else (with the park brake set FIRMLY) put it in gear and let the clutch out, and see if you can see and axle shaft turn, even though the wheels aren't turning>
