Suzuki: resetting a service engine soon light, suzuki sidekick sport, 1996 suzuki sidekick

Question
I have a 1996 Suzuki Sidekick Sport.  How do I re-set the "service engine soon" light?

Answer
All cars sold in the US from 1996 on are required to have OBD II (on board diagnostics level 2) as mandated by the Clean Air Act. Whenever the computer detects some aspect of engine operation that could result in unfavorable emissions being created, it lights the MIL (malfunction indicator light), the "service engine soon" light.  Most shops have a code reader to determine what device has given a reading out of normal parameters.  Usually it's fairly easy to diagnose and repair.  Only then will it do any good to erase the code, and shut off the light.  Otherwise, the light will just come on again.
