Suzuki: 4WD vs 2WD, fuel mileage, gas mileage

Question
Hi David
Is 4WD SUV gas-mileage more than 2WD of same kind SUV, why? and where can I find more info on this.
Thanks

Answer
It's like this....
All wheel drive like Audi and Subaru and a few others is designed to split the power fairly equally, and is designed to allow wheels to rotate at different speeds when cornering, thus actually improving fuel mileage, because the power is equally shared by the four tires, limiting slip, and distortion from power transmission. (think of how much the big slicks on dragsters distort during heavy acceleration. It takes power to do that, and it builds heat, which also is a waste of energy)

4WD, on the other hand, such as on SUVs and vehicles intended for offroad and/or good traction under adverse circumstances, is not designed to allow wheels to turn different amounts when cornering, therefore causing tires to slide a small amount, wearing tires at a faster rate, and using more fuel due to higher losses from friction

If it makes sense, good.  If not ask more questions.
