Tips on Buying Cars: car purchase, personal preferance, brand new car

Question
I'm a recent college graduate and I'm looking to buy my first real car.  I've driven beaters and I think it's time to upgrade a little.  I'm don't want to invest the money just yet in a brand new car, but I was thinking of a 2-5 year old used car and spending up to about $16 k.  I'm looking at some sort of sedan/coupe but could use a few recommendations.  In your opinion, what are some makes and models that offer the best value for you buck in what I'm looking for?  I know it's a vague question but I'm just looking for ideas.  Anything you could report that you've experienced positively or negatively would help.  Thanks

Answer
Hi Paul,
congratulations on graduating, hope you are on your way to being very successful!!!!!! 16K is a nice amount for a first newer car. I always like Hondas and Toyotas, but for that amount of money it will be older and higher miles. What car i have liked the last few years is the Mazda 6, it is a 5 seat sedan, and unless you are over 6'2" it should not be lacking in space. The 4 or 6 cylinder is a personal preferance, with the 4 cylinder getting a slightly lower insurance cost. Another car that you may want to consider is the Hyundai. They are built much better in the 2003 and up and offer a good warranty. I grew up on American cars, but even though they are making progress, i would look toward the Japanese 1st, and the Hyundai second. Please let me know if you have nay further questions. Good Luck!!!
