Tips on Buying Cars: 2002 explorer HIGH miles, mileage vehicles, high mileage

Question
I looked at a 2002 explorer xls (4.0 V6)with 273,000 miles on it. Its in good condition and I might be able to get it for $4,000. Is that under-valued enough that IF I had to get major engine repair down the road it may still be worth it? or should I run  for my life??

Answer
Per the well-researched guides out there, it's not a bad price for a 4x4, but too much for the 2WD model.  Problem is, the 4x4 is where you're most likely to have problems in a high-mileage Explorer.  If you've read any of my other responses, then you know I'm not afraid of high-mileage vehicles.  This Explorer has averaged over 50,000 miles PER YEAR, and there's only one way to do that: on the interstate.  You simply can't accumulate that kind of mileage in short-trip, stop-and-go city driving, the one condition that's hardest on a vehicle.  Every mile on the expressway is almost pure loafing; no shifting between gears, no opening and closing doors, little or no wear on the fabric, etc...  While every other prospective buyer runs from this vehicle, I'll bet you have a chance to buy it for between $3-4,000.

Just one thing: I would like to see the maintenance records on this Explorer, if I were you.  Maintenance is always important on any vehicle, and 2002 is the first year for this body style.  Make sure all the recalls, service updates and trouble-prone areas have been addressed.
