Tips on Buying Cars: Buying used car from U.S. to Canada..., mitsubishi 3000gt, new york state department of motor vehicle

Question
Hi,
I'm pretty set on buying a nice used car thats is in the Long Island, NY and I am from Ontario. I have been looking for a long time and finally found a nice 1992 Mitsubishi 3000gt just as I have been looking for. Now, will I have to do anything special to bring in a used car to Canada from the states? Taxes, e-test/certify, other paperwork? etc. It's a private sale and I'm planning on going down there to pick it up and drive it home if all works out well.

Sorry to bog you down, but I also don't know how to go about getting a temporary license plate... I plan on ordering a custom one but that will not make it in time. Is there anything I can do to actually get this car and hopefully drive it right hope in just over a week from now?

Thanks a lot
Any help is appreciated,

Ryan

Answer
First things first: as I live in New York State, I can help you with the info you need to get the car from Long Island to the U.S.-Canadian border.  Once you obtain the New York title, you'll need to go to a New York State Department of Motor Vehicle office; there are several on Long Island.  Go to this site for a list of them:

http://www.nysdmv.com/offices.htm

Then, go here for all the info on getting the paperwork you'll need to get it to the border:

http://www.nysdmv.com/register.htm

Scroll down to "In-Transit Permit (Temporary Registration)."

As it states, you'll need to provide proof of insurance on the car that you're purchasing, and you'll need to get that from your insurer BEFORE you leave to get the car.

As for getting it into Canada, go to this site for starters:

I think you'll agree, after reading all of these links, that it will probably take more than a week to get the car.  The owner of the car will probably insist on U.S. funds, and that alone can take time, especially if you have to mail him a deposit.

When you do get the car, stop to see me in Rochester and we'll have lunch!  Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask more questions- we're here to help.
