Tips on Buying Cars: Used Car, independent mechanic, long and happy life

Question
Hi, I think I recently asked you a question about buying a used car. My equity loan didn't go as well as hoped so now I can only spend $4000 and my trade in. It a 2001 Hyundai Sonata with 96k miles on it and front end damage. I drive it everyday, it's fine. But I only get 19 miles per gallon and this HAS to end! So I'm not finding a bunch of Civics or Corollas like I want in this this price range. And a big problem is that most used car places don't offer a warranty- except for 1 place. I would like to buy from them!

Anyway, my question is about the Ford Escort ZX2. I've spent alot of time researching the Civic and Corolla, but I found a well priced Ford Escort ZX2. Are they good cars? Will I get alot of miles out of them? I like the gas mileage OK. The one I'm looking at is $2888 and has 71k miles on it. Can you please tell me if it's about to die in a few miles or will it last to about 200k miles like the Civic and Corolla?
Thanks,
Lisa

Answer
Hey Lisa,

Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding; sometimes work gets in the way of the rest of my life.

I'm sorry things didn't work out for you with your equity loan, but I guess it's now time for plan B.

The Ford Escort has good ratings; I've never owned one, but did sell them when I was in the business. But what I can't tell you is if a car with 71k miles will live a long and happy life, or die soon. The potential however, to take you a long way is there with this car, the same as with the Civic or Corolla. To help you with this, here's something that I would highly recommend.

Before you buy it try to find an independent mechanic to look it over for you. Hate to have you spend the money, but considering what the costs can be if there's an existing problem, it is an excellent investment. If you have, or know anyone who uses a particular mechanic or garage, ask them to do it. Personally, I wouldn't NEVER, NEVER, NEVER just trust the dealership. They only have one thing in mind--selling you a car. A warranty would be a very good thing, but I doubt it would last long, and cars have a nasty habit of breaking just after the warranty expires. I always wondered how cars know this . . .

Anyhow, I hope this helps you a little.

Best of luck, and Happy Holidays, Lisa!
