Tips on Buying Cars: TRANNY, generation taurus, count your blessings

Question
1999 taures problems with tranny not shiting into gear by mechanic does this mean may need new tranny what may this cost.

Thanks

Answer
Based on my experience with that generation Taurus, most didn't make it much past 75,000 without a transmission failure.  If you did better than that, count your blessings.  Because so many failed early, most junked Taurus's have lower mileage transmissions than the cars they come out of and they are dirt cheap.  I bought one last month for a Taurus for $250.00 and paid $500 for install.  Car now drives like new for less than 1/2 the cost of a rebuilt transmission.

Good luck.
