I am not trying to be offensive in anyway however your letter was a little hard to understand, I think you are asking my opinion on gas, reliability, etc.. of a 1996 explorer 4WD with approx. 77,000 miles (I had to convert it for my own sake, metric is so much better but I grew up with miles), a 1996 cougar (140,000), and a 1999 cougar(about 140,000).... Ok first.. The 4wd explorer won't get good gas mileage, probably ~15mpg city, ~20-22mpg highway... the 4wd system drains gas and isn't neccisary unless you tow alot or go offroad... and the price seems pretty good, the other two cars, with that mileage, well they would be risky... It doesn't matter what year a car is, 140,000 miles (220000 km) is alot.. If car type doesn't matter, an older 1993-1995 or so (maybe newer) honda civic with ~60-90,000 miles (around 120km or so) or even with more miles than that- would get great gas mileage and be more reliable than a cougar or explorer.. even an older integra, mustang 5.0, or camry would be better choices... Out of the three you gave me, I would go with the explorer or 1999 cougar (but check it out, it seems fairly new for that many miles, something might be wrong with the car if it was used that heavily).. I know in your price range there arent many choices, I've been there, but focus on what you NEED... IF the condition of the 1999 is good I would be cautious because the blue book is still over 3400 even with those miles... avoid the 1996.. you will be having lots of problems with that old of car with that many miles... I hope all this helps, if I missunderstood or failed to mention anything feel free to ask again.. Good luck on your purchase, and please take a look at used civics and integras, even camry's... when it comes to reliability for cheap, those will be your best bets... Hope this helps, good luck.

I have to say that the intrepid would probably be a worse choice than a civic or explorer, purely because DiamlerChrysler didn't get all their bolts tightend up until recently.. Their build quality in the 90's was usually sub-par.. gas mileage would be... well the intrepid avg about 26MPG and has a 17 gallon tank.. which is about 670km per gallon.. you should assume about 40-50km under that due to real world conditions, and given the age of the car, you may want to go even lower (such as 600km per tank or so.. and that is by no means exact.. I took the avg fuel mileage as observed by consumer guide, and multiplied it by the fuel tank capacity... you must factor in your type of driving and the engine's age to get a better estimate).. If you wanted the KM on a tank for the explorer you need to tell me if it is a v8, 2 door or 4 door, because this greatly changes mileage and fuel tank capacity... As for the intrepid, reliability will probably be poor, quality will probably be average, and gas mileage is average... The explorer may be a better choice if the gas doesn't matter THAT much... also the condition of the cars is a factor.. paint, interior shape, etc.... all matters.. Let me know more about the explorer and I will give you an estimate on one tank - and any other questions you may have... feel free to ask... Hope this helps.  Keep researching, and searching for that right car, its the smart way to do it. Thanks!

Answer
Well,
The malibu has low-ish miles, but the car itself isn't known for being very reliable... you are looking at: the explorer being more reliable but poorer gas mileage, malibu... not too reliable, cheaply built, but less miles and better mileage, and the others are probably not worth considering still.. I still urge you to look into honda's and toyota's - with the type/age/mileage/price of the vehicles you are looking at, a higher mileage honda/toyota is much much much more likely to be more reliable than any other.. Hope this helps...
