Tips on Buying Cars: Classic mustang, classic ford mustang, classic mustang

Question
Hey Ron,
I am interested in buying a classic ford mustang someday and I had some questions about maintenance and car parts.  If I had this car and it broke down or something, would a regular small town mechanic be able to fix it?  And would it be expensive buying new parts or more expensive to maintain?  Just wondering.  Thanks!

Answer
The Mustang is a great choice--you have excellent taste!

It's ironic that not long ago the question would have more more aptly stated as "would a small town mechanic be able to fix the new cars with all of their electronics and computers."

A good mechanic should be able to work on anything, and should be able to do most of the regular maintenance, tune-ups, change water pumps, etc., you need. And since the Mustang was, and is a popular American icon, getting parts for it shouldn't be too bad either.

As far as the parts being more expensive, it depends on how classic of a Mustang you're talking about. Although I've never priced one out, I'd bet that a 1964 (for example) transmission would be both more difficult to find, and more expensive than for a '95. But, you have to weigh the extra costs and inconvenience you might experience v. the pleasure of owning this great vehicle. I pay upwards of $1,200 everytime I put tires on my Porsche, but it's worth it because I'm driving a Porsche--same idea.

So, if it does cost a little more, aren't you worth it?

Regards,

Ron
