Tips on Buying Cars: Is this considered a lemon?, head gasket, purchasing a car

Question
We were purchasing a car from a private seller.  We test drove the car, there seemed to be nothing wrong. A depostit was left and came back 1 week later to complete the deal.

The title and tags were transfered.  When we got back to the sellers house to take the car the check engine light came on. We took the car to a local garage for a diagnostic test and were told it needed a tune-up.

It was agreed that we (buyers) would take it for a tune-up and the seller would help pay for parts. We were then told, by the garage, that the car needed a new head gasket at $800 for parts and labor.

I immediately stopped payment on my check and called seller. She said she, "did not feel responsible for the head gasket and would not let us return the car"

What could happen in this situation?

Answer
Hi Jason
Legally the title is in your name, At what point did seller agree to help pay for parts ?
Had you not stopped payment on cheque then i would say you had no recourse.
