Tips on Buying Cars: Car purchase, dmv office, lien holder

Question
What is the typical way someone would purchase a car from a private individual if they need to pay off the car loan to get the title?  Do we agree to sign a bill of sale.  I'm concerned that I wont have a title in hand when I hand over a check.

Answer
Hi Dan
Its up to the seller to contact the lien holder and provide you with a  clear title, you must not hand over a cheque without a proper title.
You did not provide me with a zip or postal code, which i always ask for, i got no idea where your from as the answer could differ...

Do a google...type...DMV and state your in, you will get all the answers, and if not sure phone your local DMV office it will be listed...
