Tips on Buying Cars: Used Car differences, preference test, ford taurus

I am currently shopping for a used car, and have narrowed my search down to either a newer (2003,2002) Ford Taurus or Dodge Intrepid, as these cars fit my needs, OR, an older (1999,2000) pair of cars, namely, a VW Passat or a Volvo S70; all the cars have about average miles for their years, but I wonder if the better build/design quality of the VW and Volvo would offset their age and mileage so that they'd be better than the newer Ford or Dodge? I really like your Q as you realize going import you have to settle for an older model for same bucks...
Your question is the type ask 10 people and you will get all diff answers...but i will be happy to give you my thoughts...
domestic quality has improved steady over the last few years and i have seen many happy owners driving Taurus and Intrepid's with over 200k...
If i was looking for space then my choice would be Intrepid...you cant compare a Passat with Intrepid...they handle and feel totally diff on the hwy...it really comes down to preference test driving these vehicles...

If your buying domestic 2003 subject to miles you will have some warranty left...whereas going import you most likely wont for those years...

If you like the feel and handle of the Passat i can only say they have a proven track record and if you get the TD model it will last forever...

Volvo...These Swedish cars have excellent workmanship and i put them in the BMW class...the only holdback i would consider would be mechanical problems which would cost more...

Michael take all 4 for test drives and make sure you include some hwy driving...you will narrow your choices down as to what feels tight and suits your driving style...
