Tips on Buying Cars: used vans/cars, frame damage, rule of thumb

Question
Hi Bud
Looking to purchase a newer van. Anywhere from 2 to 5 years old. Is there a rule of thumb to go by as far as year of vehicle and mileage along with price is concerned. For example: 2001 van 40,000 miles selling for 16300 canadian dollars, or 2000 van 52000 miles selling for 14,000 can dollars. Then  you can purchase a 2002 van with 45000 miles for 16000 can dollars. I also saw 1999 van with 40000 miles selling for 13500 can dollars. How important is mileage compared to year and cost of the van. Can a 1997 van with 50000 miles be just as good as a newer van with same mileage. It is difficult to decide what is best and greatest value. Thanks for your input.

Answer
Tough and complicated question, especially since you live in Canada.  Rule of thumb(USA) is 12,000 to 15,000 miles per year.  As to price there are so many variables there really is no standard.  Some vehicles lose value much quicker than others no matter what the mileage.  Also some vehicles have major mechanical problems.  If I were in the market I would go to edmunds.com and check the retail prices on the vehicles you are interested in.  Make sure you use the same specs on each one.  Whatever you decide on make sure you have a mechanic you trust check it over completely.  Minor things are fine but if there are major problems stay away from it.  Also check to make sure there are no warranty recalls skipped and that there has been no major wrecks, frame damage, water damage and that there is a clear and unencumbered title.  Best of luck to you.  Bud
