Tips on Buying Cars: Steps to selling my car privately, maserati coupe, california dmv

I own a 2005 Maserati coupe in California and want to sell it. I understand that selling it privately  is the best way to maximize my price. I've researched the Web for the steps necessary to actually transfer ownership, but what I've found is confusing. I want to do this right. Can you walk me through the process of a actually selling the car once I've found a buyer? Exactly what paperwork do I need and what does it look like? What fees are involved and which am I responsible for? What do I have to do to protect myself from the buyer haunting me after the sale? I would appreciate as much detail and clarity as you have time for. Even the California DMV site left me confused.
