Tips on Buying Cars: 2003 Mini Cooper, salvage title, honda civic

Mini Cooper Hi Steve,

I am a senior in high school and am looking to purchase my first car.  On craigslist, I found a 2003 black Mini Cooper with 25,200 miles listed for $2,900. The car is in good condition, with no noticeable markings.  It has never been in an accident and only shows usual signs of use.

I have a budget of about $4,000 that I have earned from summer jobs throughout high school.  Is this a good deal on this type of car?  And would I have enough money left over for gas/insurance for a short while?

Hi Will,
It is good you have saved some money for your first car. But i will just get to the point. There are many scams on Craigs list, without even looking at the entire add i can tell you it is a scam. Either they will rip off your money, or even if the car was a salvage title (rebuilt), which is generally unsafe and poor quality, it would cost much more...I recommend you forget this car, look at local ads near where you live and maybe you can find a decent Honda Civic or similar vehicle. Even if the Mini was that price, you maintenance and upkeep will be very high. Please elt me know if you have nay other questions and good luck looking for that special first car!!!!
