Tips on Buying Cars: Buying a car out of state (again), legal implications, nick nick

Question
Hello JB, I saw your answer to the guy buying a car in CA, but wanting it tagged in KS.  I have a similar situation where I will purchase a new car in KS, but drive it home in OK.  I was wondering are there any tax issues that I need to be aware of?  And what about any legal implications with having a temp KS license plate in OK (on the drive home and a few days before it would be officially tagged in OK)?  Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Nick

Answer
Nick,

Thanks for your question.  This is actually very very common.  You have not legal implications at all, as a temporary tag is good in any state.  As far as the taxes, just make sure that the dealership that you are buying the car from charges you the 3.25% Oklahoma taxes, not the KS taxes, or if you are handling the taxes on your own, then you have no issues.

Hope this helps.

Thanks - JB
