Tips on Buying Cars: buying a used car as a foreigner, planning a road trip, insurance card

Question
Hi,
this summer I am planning a road trip across the United States and I would like to buy a car (it seems cheaper and easier thing to do than renting one). Can I (non-US citizen) buy a used car (I would pay with cash)? If yes, do I have to register somewhere after buying it? And what about car insurance? Can I insure it so that more people can drive it?  Thank you

Answer
With proper ID, you should be able to buy a used car almost anywhere.  Yes, you will need to register and insure it, but that one registration and insurance card will cover you throughout the U.S.  The key is that you would need a residence in one of the states to do this; if you don't currently live in the U.S., then this would be a problem.  I can tell you that both insurance and registration fees are among the lowest here in New York state (as long as you're outside of Long Island, New York City and its surrounding suburban counties).  And it's the car you're insuring, so it will be covered by anyone driving it, as long as you've given that person permission to drive the car (most insurance companies provide such coverage, but you'd need to check with them first to make sure they'll cover multiple drivers).
