Tips on Buying Cars: 10 day old new car with problems, jaguar xk, attorney general office

Question
I recently leased a new Jaguar xk convertible. After 10 days, the car would not
start and had to have it towed to the dealer. After three days in the dealer's
service shop, I am told the car needs a instrutment cluster replacement. The car
has less than 200 miles on it. I told the dealer they should replace the car with a
new one. They said no. What is your opinion?

Answer
It sounds like you have the makings of a real lemon, which is why there are "lemon laws" on the books in nearly every state.  BUT- you have to follow through with the process.  The laws vary from state to state, but many are similar to New York's law.  Here, you can get a replacement vehicle or a refund of the purchase price if one of two things happen:  you've returned the vehicle three times to have the same defect repaired and they're unable to fix it, OR if the vehicle has been tied up in their shop for 30 days or more within the first year.  So, I doubt you can get a new car at this point, only 10 days and 200 miles into your purchase.  Regardless, you need to contact the agency or department in your state that regulates lemon-law for vehicles; in New York, it's the state's Attorney General office.
