Tips on Buying Cars: Buying a 2004 Acura EL premium, acura el premium, auction price

Question
Hello Danny,

I was recently told the value of the premium model at auction price is 10,500, but i have only been seeing this car close to 15 and 16k, so when I last went into the dealer and asked for 12,400-700, it didn't quiet go as planned. After reducing the price to that level they kept on adding MISC. charges making it go back closer to the orignal price.  The closest i see is the following

I would like to pay for the car  fully..and don't need financing. How would I go about getting a good deal without feeling i'm not goin to get it and its going to stay there for someone else? Thanks so much.

Answer
Hello Thinesh,

Thanks for your question. I'm not entirely familiar with the Canadian market but from what I can research it seems your correct about auction value, it should be somewhere around 10500 to 11500 with avg km. You need to remember that may be what they paid for the car but then you have to recondition the car in order to sell it, you need to ask what did they do to recondition it, are there new tires, what was done mechanically? When you add all that up you will have a better idea of the cost.
As for MISC. charges it is against the law in the US and the law is harsh on those that try to charge for MISC. You should look at this sight; http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/vehicle/used.htm#buying
They make it clear about what you have to pay as far as taxes and any fees. Do not pay any misc fees, vin etch or security systems, etc...
I did look in different areas further away from you (Winnipeg) and found 7 cars with same km or less and they were at 12900 or less and thats before negotiating. I don't know about the distance but if I could save several thousand dollars it might make for a nice road trip. If it has to be that particular car, I would go back to the dealer and find the General Sales Mgr,tell him about the fees and see what he can work out. Dealers don't like to hear your not financing, thats were they can make up some of there money, tell them you have not decided yet, that you could go either way. You've done a great job so far on your research, I hope this helps, so re-group, take a deep breath and go get what you want. Dont take no for a answer.
