Tips on Buying Cars: Trade in with extended warranty, odometer statement, pontiac g6

Question
I purchased a brand new vehicle in December of 2005 (2006 Pontiac G6).  I also purchased a extended warranty when I purchased the vehicle.  This was all done at the dealership.  I'm now wanting to trade in the vehicle on something else but wanted to know if I can get any of the money back from the unused extended warranty?  I heard the dealership can handle this for me when I purchase a new vehicle but wasn't sure if I had to use the same dealership I orginally used to purchase my current vehicle and extended warranty?  I would like to be able to purchase from a different dealership but wasn't sure if they could assist with recovering the unused extended warranty or if I would have to handle that myself.  Thanks.

Answer
Tim,

Thanks for your question.  You will have money coming back to you on your extended warranty.  How much is what the dealership can tell you.  As far as another dealership being able to cancel, more than likely they will not be able to.  You will have to go to the dealership that sold you the extended service contract and cancel it.  You can still buy your vehicle at another dealership, but the original dealership will have to cancel your extended service contract.  Simply buy your vehicle and then go to the original dealership or call them and cancel your extended service contract.  They will want a copy of the odometer statement on the G6 that you get a copy of when you trade the vehicle in at the other dealership.  Eitherway, the money will come back to you.

Hope this helps.
