Tips on Buying Cars: buying out of state, saab dealer, saabs

Question
Hi Jeff,
I'm wanting to snag a new 2007 Saab before they're all gone.  Most dealers, including my local dealer with whom I purchased a Saab previously, are now only selling 2008 models.  I've managed to locate a few 2007 Saabs at dealers in various parts of the country - all at least 1000 miles from me.  Is it reasonable, or not at all, to ask my local Saab dealer to get me one of the 2007 Saabs I've located from a remote dealer and then purchase it from him (local dealer)? If so, will I end up paying for the costs involved in transporting the car as part of the final price? If so, would it be better to purchase the car directly from a remote Saab dealer and arrange and pay for the shipping myself?  Thanks for your help!
Rob

Answer
Whether you have the local dealer get the car for you, or you buy it directly from the remote dealer and arrange for transport, the cost of shipping it in either circumstance will be horrendous.  If it were me, I'd buy the car directly, fly to the dealership (they'll be happy to have someone pick you up at the airport), take delivery of the car yourself and drive it home.  The airfare will be far cheaper than the cost of auto transport.  The dealer can arrange or a temporary license and registration in his state, most of which give you 30 days to drive the vehicle home where you'll title it and pay sales tax (one of the few exceptions is Massachusetts).  If you don't want to fly and happen to work for a large company, you could get an inexpensive one-way corporate car rental (again, with the dealer picking you up at the rental agency).  Let me know which state the selling dealer is located, which state you live in, and I can tell you how it all works.
